Though my career has morphed to encompass lots of kinds of writing, there is one constant: deadlines. Ever since going to journalism school, my life has been defined by them. So much so that I’ve realized I can’t accomplish anything without attaching a deadline to it. So here is my new deadline: I will solve this midlife crisis by August 1, 2010.
Here’s the first thing that has to be figured out:
Where we’ll live
Besides the general truth that we can’t really afford to buy a house in the Bay Area, some recent accounting shuffles we made to save on taxes means we REALLY can’t afford to buy a house in the Bay Area. End of story. So what now.
We currently have three choices:
a) Continue renting
Goal here would be to find a long-term rental in a Bay Area neighborhood with good schools
b) Move to where we can afford a house
Goal here would be to find a place that we love as much as we love the Bay Area, but more affordable in general, with good public schools, a good coffee shop, thai food, theater that shows independent films.
c) Move to where my husband could get a job in his field:
This would mean moving to New York or LA and it would mean he would have to have a very good job to make this move possible (right now, he’s a freelancer like me).
Tomorrow, I’ll discuss another component of this non-crisis midlife crisis.
